A little history about felt

Felt is one of the oldest materials we know. In the past, this material was made mainly from animal fibers, but nowadays they are replaced by synthetic fibers. It is produced as a flat fabric with interlocking fibers, which are connected either by rolling (turkey felt) or needling (dry felt). Felt is made from a fiber fleece as a non-woven fabric, or a fabric with a felted surface.

Use of felt/felt

Compared to the past, the use has changed a lot and today felt is used for many more things. Here we have a few types for its use, and you will surely think of many others:

How to work with felt/felt and how to maintain it?

Felt is a specific material that has certain properties that influence the choice of sewing tools. As it is a strong and dense material, it is necessary to use robust needles and strong threads. Sewing machines can be used, but felt is also ideal for hand sewing, allowing for the creation of detailed and precise patterns. Felt is very easy to cut, glue, sew and can be embroidered on.

Felt generally does not need ironing, thanks to its firm and dense character. However, if it is necessary to remove any wrinkles, it should be ironed at a low temperature over a damp cloth to avoid direct contact between the iron and the felt.

We recommend washing it and you will have a lot of fun with this material.

You can currently find felt in our e-shop in a weight of 170 g/m2, a height of 1 mm, a width of 90 cm, and in a weight of 470 g/m2 and a height of 2 mm.

How is felt produced?

Felt is one of the oldest known textile materials. It has deep roots in various cultures around the world. It was discovered in Central Asia, where it was considered an important material for clothing, footwear and roofing. The cultural and historical meanings of felt vary by geographic area, from religious and ritual objects to common household use.

Unlike most textiles, which are created by weaving or knitting fibers, felt is made by a process that consists of matting and compressing fibers, most commonly wool. The result is a tightly bonded structure that is strong, tensile-resistant and insulates well. The weight of felt can vary depending on its purpose, from light for decorative purposes to heavy for technical applications.

Felt is primarily composed of natural fibers, usually wool, but can also be made from man-made fibers such as polyester. Dyes used for felt can be both natural and synthetic. Surface treatments and adhesives are sometimes used to increase resistance to mold, water or to improve its appearance and structure.
