Created3/2/2016

We have a favorite sweatshirt, jacket, vest, or your children's beautiful overalls in the closet at home, but when you raise your hands, it's not what it used to be? The sleeves are a little shorter, they drag on our bare back, or their ends are unsightly and need a quick fix. For these quick repairs, we have braids that are suitable for extending a favorite piece in the wardrobe or making it special.

What is a braid and how is it made?

Knit or patent is a circular knit fabric that is knitted on circular knitting machines in one piece in the shape of a hose. Circular knitting machines have reed needles lined up in a circle next to each other, moving individually one after the other in the grooves of a cylinder that is constantly rotating. The needles move up and down and the feed thread is caught by the needle head. The supplied thread creates an eye through which the finished knitted fabric is threaded. On circular knitting machines, it is possible to set mechanically or electronically patterning, thanks to which the knitted fabric will get a new impressive look.

In the e-shop you will find elastic cotton braids 2:2 in a width of 2x35 cm and composed of 95% cotton and 5% lycra with elasticity in the direction of the warp and weft with visible ribbing. We have new ribbed braids in a wide range of 27 colors, where everyone can choose the right color for themselves.

What to use braids for

We don't have to use braids only to extend sleeves, but also to decorate sewn clothes. They are well used for lower bands for clothing, elastic hems for trousers, lower edges of trousers and work clothes. It is widely used for clothing for small children, who will soon grow out of it and their clothes will last longer, and pleasant hems will not constrict them anywhere. Thanks to the hems from the braid, it will no longer drag on our backs, arms, legs, and our clothes, when choosing the right color, can gain originality and practicality. The braids can be stylishly combined with plain and patterned tracksuits in the same or different colors.

How to work with yarn

Weave, or patent, is a type of material that requires specific tools for sewing. It is important to use the right needle - for braiding, needles with a round tip are suitable, which do not pierce the fibers, but pass between them.

As for threads , it is recommended to use medium-strength threads , which are durable, but at the same time not too heavy for the material.

When it comes to sewing machines , it is recommended to use a machine with a free arm, which makes it easier to sew round parts such as sleeves or hems.

Processing of the yarn/patent material

When cutting the braid, it is important to work carefully and with precision. The fibers in the weft are loosely woven, so they can easily fray if cut roughly.

When it comes to sewing , the ribbing is elastic, which can be a challenge. It is advisable to use a stitch that is flexible and allows the material to move, such as zigzag or a special stitch for stretch materials.

Gluing the braid is generally not recommended, as it can limit its natural elasticity and impair the final appearance and comfort of the garment.

Maintenance and handling of the fabric of the thread/patent

  • Washing the braid/patent

The knitwear can generally be washed in a washing machine , but it is advisable to wash it on a gentle program and at a lower temperature, ideally around 30°C. Avoid using aggressive detergents.

  • Ironing the plait/patent

Ironing the braid can be a bit more complicated. The material should be ironed at a lower temperature , preferably using steam. An ironing pad can be used against excessive tension and for more precise ironing.

  • Drying of the braid/patent

After washing, the braid should be dried in a natural way, ideally in a dryer. The use of a dryer should be limited as it can cause unnecessary damage and shorten the life of the material.

Combination of braid with other materials

Braid is a very versatile material that can be easily combined with many other textiles. Its neutral texture and bold colors make it ideal for mixing and matching with different textures and shades. It can be combined with smooth materials such as silk or satin for a contrasting effect. The knit also harmonizes well with heavier fabrics such as denim or corduroy .

Since the braid is a soft and flexible material, it can be easily used for various surface treatments . For example, braided decorations on a corduroy jacket can create an interesting contrast and give the product a unique look.
