Spring short jacket or coat.

Created4/30/2015

We have a long weekend ahead of us and come enjoy it with us while sewing a new spring coat. The coat can be sewn without a lining or with a lining . This depends only on you, which jacket you need more in your wardrobe.

The coat is hip-length, fastened with a zip. Pockets with zippers are sewn on the front part of the jacket. The back part of the jacket extends into the front part in the shoulder strap, where we get a beautiful detail of the shoulder straps. The sleeves are two-piece and long. At the neck, the jacket is finished with a low stand-up collar.

For a jacket with a length of ± 51.5 cm you will need:

1.3 m of fabric for jackets, coats, e.g.: Costume fabric no. 5263/005

1.3 m lining

2 pcs of threads

1 pc zip

2 zip pockets

Sewing procedure:

  1. trace the cut of the coat on the fabric and add to the seams. Pin the coat and cut out all the parts from the fabric

  2. if you decide to sew a jacket with a lining , cut out the necessary parts from the lining as well. You don't need to lay the cut on the lining , but it is better to lay the cut parts from the top material directly on it. The parts will be accurate and the same size

  3. before sewing the jacket itself, we first sew pockets on the front part, if we don't want pockets, it is possible to leave them out and sew a jacket without pockets

  4. if we decided on a lining, we will sew the pads on the front part of the lining . Pin the lining face to face on the lining parts and sew the width of the seam allowance. Iron the resulting seam towards the lining

  5. first, we sew the side parts to the jacket, place the back and front parts face to face on top of each other and pin them together. We sew in the width of the seam allowance and iron the seam. We sew the lining parts in the same way and iron the seam towards the back part. In one of the seams near the lining , we leave an opening for turning the sewn jacket

  6. Place the sewn parts of the lining and top material face to face. We pin the parts together and check whether they fit together. If not, we cut the overlaps

  7. in the next step we will sew shoulder straps. Place the front and back parts face to face at the place of the shoulder straps, pin and sew in the width of the added seam. Iron the seam towards the back part. We will sew shoulder straps from the lining in the same way

  8. next, we will prepare the sleeves, which we will place face to face and sew across the width of the seam. We will sew the sleeves from the lining in the same way

  9. now we sew the sleeves into the prepared armholes. According to the cut, we marked the points on the sleeve and the armhole, which we will now put on ourselves and pin the rest of the sleeve into the armhole. In the sleeve head, the sleeve will be a little loose. It is better to put on the sleeve before the actual sewing, so that the sleeve in the armhole is beautifully and smoothly sewn. We stitch the sleeve head twice for greater strength. Sew the sleeve on the lining in the same way

  10. after sewing the sleeve, we sew a stand into the neckline and iron the resulting seam

  11. on the edges of the front parts, we place the back of the zipper on the cheek and sew it on with help. During the actual sewing, it will not move and the zipper will be beautifully sewn

  12. we place the front parts and the neck piece on the front parts and the neck piece of the lining face to face and pin them together. Sew the jacket in the width of the added seam

  13. iron the resulting seam and turn the coat inside out. For the entire jacket, we replace the grommet and fasten it

  14. we turn the jacket in our hands and sew the length of the sleeve and the jacket. For a better attachment of the lining so that it does not slip, it is a good idea to fasten the resulting seams of the coat to the seams of the jacket

  15. we turn the jacket through the hole left in the lining and compare and iron the entire jacket

  16. sew the front edges and the stand at the selected distance and iron the jacket again

  17. we sew the opening in the lining either by hand or by machine

We have already finished our spring coat and now we just have to hit the streets.
